History: Lake Norman Free Clinic began in 1999, when Dr. David Cook began seeing 4 to 5 uninsured patients, on Wednesday nights, in the back of an area grocery store. That number rose quickly and by 2001, the clinic was seeing 40-45 patients every Wednesday evening.
From this humble beginning, the nonprofit, free medical clinic was developed with support from four area churches: First Baptist Church Huntersville, St. Mark Catholic Church, Meadowlake Presbyterian Church, and Davidson United Methodist Church. Three members of each church serve on the clinic’s board to guide and make decisions for the clinic.
More than 100 professional doctors, nurses and lab technicians volunteer their services to the clinic on a rotating schedule and have served more than 2,700 patients since 2001. A referral system is in place for patients that need additional care from specialists.
The clinic is primarily supported through donations from churches, businesses, groups and individuals, which cover the clinic’s operating expenses and medical supplies.
Lake Norman Free Clinic is a member of the NC Association of Free Clinics.
